In memory of Emmett Till.
"Keep believing. Keep marching. Keep building. Keep raising your voice. Every generation has the opportunity to remake the world.” - Barack Obama, July 2018
Kicking it old school again this week.
And just for Duchess Deedles; listen to the lyrics and see why she recommended this song: (here)
Natalie! What a great song! And Eartha, she had a really great range that was always surprising!
ReplyDeleteFIRST! eartha could sing in french and spanish and english and purrrrrrrrrrrrrr each one!
DeleteMiles Davis on a stormy Saturday morning... could anything be more perfect. You are out-doing your fine self every week Ms. DJ. Love this program. Request time: Stylistics... cuz I just LURVE them so much. But Eartha, Natalie, Vanessa, The Chi-lites, Big Mama, Fats, Archie, The Contours... OMG... Thank you. Bless you.
ReplyDeleteOK, next week; watch this space!
DeleteGREAT music. I can't believe I had forgotten this song. I never really listened closely to it simply because the music style wasn't of interest to me. "Mommy and Daddy are who's to blame." Wow! Thanks to Deedles!
ReplyDeleteduchess picked out a good one.
DeleteI know that song, Skip a Rope, but never really listened. Wow.
ReplyDeleteThanks Duchess for the suggestion, and thanks AM for the post.
And thanks John Lewis ho being a hero, a statesman and an activist. RIP sir.
john lewis has reached the promised land.
DeleteWow! I didn't expect to be balling like a baby at 7:30am, but here I am with tears running down my cheeks. I started going down your list of songs and POW...you got me! My best friend when I was 18 used to sing Have You Seen Her? It was hilarious because she had all the moves down and the falsetto...the whole works minus the outfits. She probably would have done that if she could have managed it under the circumstances. Charlene was a real hoot. She died when she was 23 and it broke my heart. Not that I wanted to start the day by crying, but thank you for making me start my day by remembering someone I once loved dearly and who left this world way too young.
ReplyDeletemy condolences about your friend; 23 is waaaaay too young to pass. I hope the memories of charlene are a comfort to you.
DeleteThanks for taking my request, Carebear! You can DJ my parties anytime, not that I have parties but it's the thought that counts. Big Mama Thornton beats Elvis hands down with Hound Dog! Chi-Lites take me back. It is always funny, to me at least, to see artists lip sync the speaking parts.
ReplyDeleteGAYmen on big mama, duchess! see, other people liked your request too!
DeleteBig Mama Thornton slaps! First time I hear her. Fantastic sound. Miles Davis is like butter. I need him in my collection. That Natalie Cole song makes me wanna dance.
ReplyDeleteOMG Jujube WAS Eartha!
XoXo
P.S. as Bob mentioned, sad to hear of John Lewis passing...
I see I am still educating your musical knowledge. watch this space for more fabu music!
Delete'Skip a Rope' entirely new to me, and even now sounds brave for subject matter.
ReplyDeleteEartha Kitt was undeservedly taken from us far too early - a mere 80 years old. Should have lived forever.
Did you ever see Jim Jarmush's film 'Mystery Train' [1989] - one of my all-time faves? Compendium of three stories linked by the spirit of Elvis. All very entertaining throughout but best part for me is the last, with Screamin' Jay Hawkins - and Spike Lee's younger brother, Cinque.
It's a treat.
Have a nice, safe w/e, W.Q.
nope, have never seen "mystery train"; will check it out!
Deleteit is SO DAMN HOT here, over 100F. early yesterday morning RTG went to the grocery store and I took some fresh cucumbers from the garden to a local food bank. we have not been outside since, and won't be til tuesday at the earliest.
if it's not the heat, it's the virus still raging. and those of us who are obeying the rules are ridiculed for doing so by the covidiots (donald dump supporters). the covidiots need to die and leave the country to the intelligents.
hope you and the pussies are staying cool and safe. what restrictions do you have to obey in the UK to avoid the virus?
We don't have to 'try' to stay cool here, W/Q. We haven't had a truly hot spell here since those freaky two weeks back in April. Still, it's not cold here, either - most days around 20C so it's just about shorts-wearing weather - but only just. However, I don't envy you at all - as though dodging the 'V' wasn't enough to cope with by itself! Here's wishing you some cooling, refreshing relief in the weather.
DeleteEven though mask-wearing has not become politicised at all here as it is where you are, it's disappointing to see that I am part of only a small minority who don't go out without a mask. which I've been doing for over two months now. But it becomes obligatory from this Fri, I think, for everyone to be masked when going into all shops. There's certainly no great outcry about it. The only concern is that BoJo is pressing very hard on opening up and returning to work, almost as though it's practically over - just like another 'leader' whom you just MIGHT be aware of! Silly man! (Both of them). Far too early and too risky.
BtW - that 'Mystery Train film, I perhaps should warn you has the first of its three linked 'episodes' mainly in Japanese, with two young tourists in U.S.A. - subtitled of course. Hope that doesn't put you off. Still worth watching. As for Screamin' J.H. in the very enteryaining last part, didn't he leave us a huge legacy in maintaining the world population - over 50 children, I believe, though not all from the same mother. Just wanted to make that clear. ;-)
Hope your own 'family' is managing to cope with the heat, though it must be especially trying for the l'il uns with their year-round Winter coats.
'See' ya at w/e.
right now the little ones are taking their morning naps in the air conditioned house. nothing bothers them.
DeleteI remember when "Skip a Rope" was a big hit in the late 60s. Probably the only socially conscious country song ever recorded.
ReplyDeletethere was another country song I remember from the 90s: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4VPpAZ9_qAw. a song about domestic abuse.
DeleteHave a great weekend. Thanks for the playlist. RJJS
ReplyDeleteyou are most welcome, dear. c ya next week!
DeleteEartha!!!!! I haven't heard her voice in a long time. I missed her as Catwoman as well as the occasional appearance on The Howard Stern show back in the day. I hope you're enjoying your weekend.
ReplyDeletepurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. hope you and your cats are safe and cool and well. take care of your back, ya hear!
DeleteThanks for the tunes Anne Marie! I teach all about Emmett Till to my class. Most have never heard of him. Enjoy the rest of your weekend.
ReplyDeletegood for you to teach about emmett. say their names so they are not forgotten. the bastards that got away with killing emmett SHOULD have suffered the same fate; if I ruled the world, they WOULD HAVE!
DeleteHere I am a day late again, have fun, stay safe, stay well.
ReplyDeletethe party NEVER ends on MY blog, dear. too hot to do anything but stay inside. and then there's that virus...wasn't it supposed to go away when the weather got hotter? uh huh.
DeleteThey are all sad and horrible but the Emmett Till murder really breaks my heart.
ReplyDeleteand the animals that murdered emmett LIED. if I ruled the world, the animals involved in emmett's murder would have suffered the same fate and worse.
DeleteI think that is 100% OK with me, too.
DeleteEARTHA!!!!!
ReplyDeleteyassssssss, girl!
DeleteI hope last Saturday party was a splendid one.
ReplyDeleteit was.
DeleteYes...the Hand Jive...and now I'm dancing while my partner looks at me in either awe or he's baffled...
ReplyDeleteit's AWE, baby!
